Nearly A Quarter Of Americans Would Like Their State To Peacefully Secede From The United States

In the wake of Scotland's vote on whether to stay in the U.K. or not, Reuters decided to ask the same question of Americans. Do they want their particular state to secede peacefully from the United States? They asked over 9,000 Americans that question, and say their survey has a margin of error of about 1.2 points.

Of course, this is a silly question. The United States is not going to break up -- and we fought a vicious civil war to show that no state has the right to withdraw from this country. But the results of the survey was fairly shocking anyway. It seems that nearly a quarter of the general public would like to see their state secede (if it could be done peacefully). I suspect this is mainly right-wingers, who see the power of Whites starting to wane -- and they don't like that at all. Note that more than half of all teabaggers would like to secede.

So, hey, there goes democratic choice in the land of the not-so-Free!

    1. Secession and democracy have nothing to do with each other. In fact, the last time secession was tried t was to protect the very undemocratic institution of slavery.

  2. And people say I should not call teabagers stupid! Now we have proof, because if they did as they wish, there would be an INSTANT 3rd world country with a power struggle also in full flower, when they secede.

  3. Remind these illiterates that if there was a remote possibility of their being successful in secession, they would have to apply for 'foreign aid' because their tax base would be a whole lot smaller. And they would have to issue passports to their citizens if they want vacation in the old US. Their new 'country' will have to 'set-up' its government to take care of things like driver's licenses and emigration/immigration forms or they will be stuck if they need to travel out of their new country. They wouldn't just be able to move for a new job, they would have to apply for visas. Social Security would stop to seniors there and they would have to figure out a way of taking care of their medical needs 'cause Medicare would be gone. When roads needed to be repaired where would they get the previously matching Federal funds? Etc, etc, etc. We are all part of a larger economic and societal picture. These 'people' act like children playing 'King of the Mountain'.

  4. Well, at least we had the courage to allow the Scots to express their views but you lot dare not try it! Lack of confidence, perhaps?

  5. Every single one of our states is in the Union because they asked to be in it. None of them were forced to join (as Scotland was conquered and forced to join the U.K.). The two situations are not analogous -- and you know it.
